Join Our Campaign to Save the Lives of Premature Babies in the

Jaffna Teaching Hospital Neonatal ICU (NICU)

Every day, babies in Sri Lanka are born too soon, too small, or struggling to survive their first breath. Government hospitals do their best, but most NICUs are under-resourced, overcrowded, and stretched thin.

  • Nearly half (48%) of NICU admissions were preterm babies — tiny lives needing specialized care from day one.

  • Premature births are rising, yet incubators and life-saving equipment are limited.

  • Families often cannot afford medicines or formula their fragile babies urgently need.

  • Doctors and nurses work tirelessly, but the economic crisis has left hospitals short of supplies like laryngoscopes, monitors, and infection-fighting treatments.

Without support, many of these newborns will not get the care they deserve. With your help, we can change that. Your donation provides the equipment, medicine, and trained care that gives these tiny fighters a chance to live, to grow, and to go home in their mothers’ arms.

The Reality Inside Jaffna’s NICU

Despite the dedication of doctors and nurses, the NICU at Jaffna Teaching Hospital is facing severe shortages that put newborn lives at risk every single day.

Current Challenges

  • Emergency drugs often unavailable — there is no buffer stock, leaving doctors helpless in critical moments.

  • Essential medicines missing when babies need them most.

  • Severe staff shortages — 17 doctors are needed, but only 10 are available.

  • A 23-week-old baby weighing just 500g recently went home — a miracle amid limited resources.

  • Babies born at 25–28 weeks: nearly 50–75% do not survive due to inadequate care and equipments.

  • Half of all NICU babies are premature, requiring round-the-clock monitoring and specialized care.

  • Significant shortages in incubators, monitors, infection-control supplies, and life-saving drugs.

How Your Donation Helps

Your support directly provides:

  • Emergency medical equipment — incubators, phototherapy units, oxygen concentrators, and monitors.

  • Essential medicines and formula for premature and underweight babies.

  • Training and support for NICU doctors and nurses who save lives daily.

  • Sustainable supply systems to maintain consistent access to life-saving drugs.

Together, we can strengthen Jaffna’s NICU — turning every donation into hope, care, and survival for Sri Lanka’s most vulnerable newborns.
